Exchange-traded funds (ETFs) have become an important component of the investment landscape with nearly $4.8 trillion invested in these products worldwide — and their popularity is growing. According to Morningstar Inc., U.S. investment in new U.S.-listed ETFs totaled $466 billion in 2017, “almost double the previous annual record of new ETF assets.”

In response to this trend, the Investments & Wealth Institute® (formally IMCA) will provide advisors with a greater understanding of ETF products by exploring their flexibility, liquidity, and diversity at Focus on Advanced Portfolio Construction with ETFs, July 12 at the Seaport Hotel & World Trade Center in Boston, MA.
Event attendees can expect to learn how to perform due diligence, and manage client risk effectively while using ETFs through a variety of sessions led by industry experts. Highlighted sessions include:
  • The Evolution of Indexing, an overview of ETFs, with Dave Nadiq, chief executive officer, ETF.com.
  • Innovations in Indexing: How to Evaluate, a discussion on how best to evaluate ETF strategies, with Raina Oberoi, executive director, MSCI, and Rolf Agather, CFA®, managing director of North America research, FTSE Russell, and Dave Nadiq.
  • Factor Tilting or Factor Timing: Which to Use, an exploration of factor-based strategies and when to use them, with Ward Bortz, director, BlackRock, Factor-Based Strategies Group, and Tony Davidow, CIMA®, vice president and alternative beta and asset allocation strategist, The Schwab Center for Financial Research.
  • Stop Debating: Incorporating Active and Passive Management, an examination of active and passive portfolio management strategies, with Maddi Dessner, CFA®, client portfolio manager, J.P. Morgan Asset Management.

“As the trend towards using ETFs in portfolio construction continues to grow, it is important for advisors to understand the range of opportunities these funds can provide,” said Devin Ekberg, CPWA®, CFA®, managing director of education. “Seminar participants can expect to go beyond a foundational level of knowledge with sessions designed specifically to provide practical, actionable takeaways for advanced professionals.”
